Guide to the California Institute of the Arts Archive 1914-1989 bulk 1960-1985.

The California Institute of the Arts Collection contains administrative records, financial material, faculty and student materials, fundraising and development records, and other materials documenting the planning and establishment of Cal Arts. Included are materials relating to the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music and the Chouinard Art Institute; the predecessor institutions for Cal Arts. The collection also documents the involvement of Walt Disney in the formation of Cal Arts. The collection covers the years 1914 to 1989 with the bulk of the material ranging from 1960 to 1985. With the exception of photographic materials and ephemera scattered throughout the collection, this collection consists largely of textual records. Textual record types primarily include correspondence, newspaper clippings, reports, notes, financial statements, catalogs, programs, press releases, and other such materials. The largest series in the collection consists of materials related to the Chouinard Art Institute. Other large series include materials related to the planning and foundation of CalArts, development and fundraising, and the administration of Cal Arts. Of particular interest are records pertaining to the transition from the Chouinard Art Institute to the California Institute of the Arts. These records are in Subseries 2.21. Cal Arts Transition. Due to the large amount of duplication within the collection and the scattered nature of the records, this collection was reorganized during processing to bring consistency to the arrangement and to improve research access.
